ESTEQ Dynamics Coupling to EDEM

ESTEQ Dynamics Coupling to EDEM

ESTEQ Developed a coupling server in conjunction with DEM Solutions to enable co-simulation between EDEM (from DEM Solutions) and MSC.ADAMS (through MSC.EASY5) from MSC Software, as well as to any third party code or user written subroutine.

With the ESTEQ Dynamics Coupling to EDEM, a multibody simulation model can interact with particles, not only manipulating the particles, but also reacting on the force resitance due to the interaction.

The following diagram explains the information flow when an MSC.ADAMS model is coupled to EDEM:

In the above example the ADAMS model takes care of the:
  • Bodies' Dynamics
  • 3D Body-Body Contact
  • Actuators
  • Motor Torque
  • Flexible bodies etc.

while EDEM takes care of the

  • Particle to Body Contact
  • Inter-Particle Contact
  • Particle dynamics

and EASY5 can introduce

  • Control system
  • Hydraulics
  • Electrical Systems
  • User Subroutines
  • Code Coupling etc.

The Coupling has thus been designed to introduce force feedback from particle interaction to the multi-body dynamics package.
This is done by coupling the particle interaction physics simulated in EDEM with any dynamics package such as MSC.ADAMS through MSC.EASY5 or any other user written subroutine.

What's in the box?

The ESTEQ Dynamics Couling to EDEM is licensed through DEM Solutions as a product extension to EDEM.

It is distributed with an installation package that gives the user the following options:

  • Install the generic coupling (32 or 64bit)
  • Install the generic coupling as well as the coupling to MSC.EASY5 (32 or 64bit)

If the user chooses to install the coupling to EASY5, the installation will automotically determine whether or not a correclty set up installation of ADAMS is available, and if so, install the necesarry ADAMS components. If ADAMS is not setup correctly for co-simulation with EASY5, the ADAMS components will not install.

The coupling with ADAMS through EASY5 is an easy-to-use solution while using the generic coupling will require some coding from the user to setup his interface to his dynamic code with the provided protocol.

Although using ADAMS is a natural choice to simulate the dynamic behaviour of parts, ADAMS is not required for co-simulation between EDEM and EASY5 since dynamic systems can also be modelled in EASY5 only.

Success Stories:

The coupling between ADAMS & EDEM made it possible for VR Steel to analyse their bucket’s performance in a virtual environment with the following bennefits to them:

  • Many virtual prototypes vs. 1 physical prototype (reduced costs)
  • 100% repetitive virtual tests (reduced uncertainty)
  • Verification of customized bucket design for new applications (reduced risk)
  • Could manipulate filling characteristics and optimize the design
